Finding Cheap Hardwood Flooring Without Going Broke
We know, you’ve been thinking about putting in hardwood floors for a while. Maybe you like the look, maybe you like the feel, but either way, we get it. Hardwood floors are gorgeous.
But usually, they ain’t cheap.
That shouldn’t stop you from getting the floors of your dreams though! We’ve gone through all the best hardwood flooring options and have come up with some of the cheapest ones. And we mean cheap in price, not in quality.
So let’s see what we found in cheap hardwood flooring!
First of all, you need to think about a couple of preparatory things. We know, we know – you want to get right to the good stuff. But take a few seconds to do the following, and you’ll be in a much better starting place.
Think about the area(s) in which you want to install the hardwood flooring. Is it a heavily used foyer or hallway? A seldom used office? A guest bedroom? The kid’s playroom? Depending on how heavily trafficked a room or area is, you should think about the type of wood that you want. You don’t want a soft wood in the hallway where the kids are bound to play football or ride their rollerblades. A soft wood in a guest bedroom might be alright though. Luckily there are a few options in cheap hardwood flooring that can be applied to each scenario.
Numbers, numbers, numbers. Clearly if you are thinking about cheap hardwood flooring, numbers are on the brain. So, grab a tape measure and calculator to figure out the square footage of the room that you are going to need flooring for. Then you will need to calculate what 5-10% of the square footage is (for extras, mistakes, ends of pieces, etc).
Finally, calculate the following:
Square Footage + 5-10% of Square Footage = Magic Number
Write down your Magic Number. Your Magic Number is your friend. You will multiply it by the Price Per Square Foot of any flooring, to get your total Cost.
Engineered Wood Flooring
This is not the engineered wood flooring of yesterday. They were invented in the 1960’s but have made long strides in improvement since then. They are seriously a great option for cheap hardwood flooring. So hear us out.
What exactly is engineered wood flooring? Well, the floorboards are made of several slim layers of wood, glued together to make one bigger floorboard. Usually they use wood veneer as the uppermost layer, to give you the real wood feel you are craving.
Most engineered wood floorboards have a factory finish that can last longer than the ones on solid wood. These are also much easier to install yourself – meaning, you can save on installation costs. So they are super budget-conscious. Can’t beat that!
Prices per square foot can be around $3 to $12 or higher, and you can find anything from a bamboo finish to a cherry finish.
You gotta love IKEA, right? Laminate wood flooring is synthetic flooring that simulates wood. The wood “look” is shown via a photograph that is protected by a clear layer… But most times, you’d never guess it wasn’t the real thing. Seriously, doesn’t HD kick ass these days?
Usually it’s easier to clean and maintain than real wood. And it’s a helluva lot cheaper. Um, can you say “65 cents a square foot?”
Laminate is a great option for cheap hardwood flooring because it has tons of different looks. It is also super easy to install yourself. If installation just ain’t your thing though, give us a holler and we’ll see what we can do as well as answer any types of painting questions!
